Opening of Long Tunnel Creek Bridge - 21 Aug 2008

The Long Tunnel Creek Bridge on the Nangus Road 12 km west of Gundagai was opened on the 20 August by Kay Hull Member for Riverina.

Approximately 140 invited guests attended the opening ceremony including Councilors and staff from Junee and Gundagai Shires as well as local Nangus residents who welcomed the opening.

For the entertainment and to the delight of guests,  the students from Nangus Public school gave a energetic musical performance.

The construction of the bridge was made possible by a Federal Government grant of $750,000 with contribution from both the Gundagai and Junee Shire councils. It  will replace a narrow single lane structure built in 1930. The opening was well ahead of the projected completion date of December 2008. The road is an important transport link to the Hume Highway for the region and further west to Junee and Coolamon. more ..

Traffic Alert - Nangus Road - 15 Aug 2008

Motorists are advised of a lane closure on Nangus Road (Gundagai to Junee Road) at the intersection with the Hume Highway due to work being carried out by Fulton Hogan Group (FRH) on the Sheahan Bridge Duplication.

From 29 February 2008, one lane will be closed intermittently for a length of 200 metres at the Sheahan Bridge.  Traffic controllers will be on site to direct traffic at these times.

From approximately Friday14 March, one lane will then be closed continuously, with traffic lights on site to direct motorists over the length of the above section.

This lane closure will be place for the duration of the project, scheduled for completion in late 2009.

From 29 February 2008, a reduced speed limit of 40 kmh will apply at all times, and in the interests of safety, motorists are asked to follow all temporary traffic controls along the Gundagai to Junee Road.

Electronic message signs will be in place to provide motorists with advanced warning of the lane closure and the reduced speed limit.

Work will take place Mondays to Fridays from 7am and 6pm, and Saturdays from 8am to 1pm, however motorists should be alert for equipment on site at all times.

The lane closure is required for the construction of the new southbound bridge and will involve earthworks in the area.

The RTA appreciates the co-operation of motorists while this essential work is carried out.

Water Restrictions - LEVEL 2 - 29 May 2008

In response to the State Government making more water available and particularly to the responsible way that Gundagai water users have adhered to previous water restrictions the Council resolved on 13 November 2007 to impose LEVEL 2 WATER RESTRICTIONS to all domestic, commercial and industrial consumers.

From 13 May 2008 Council advises that Water Restriction times have been modified.  Level 2 Mandatory Water Restrictions still apply but, because of the cooler weather, a change has been made to restriction times for watering with fixed hoses and sprinklers only.

These times are as follows:

1 April to 30 September - 9:00am to 4:00pm

1 October to 31 March - 9:00am to 6:00pm

These restrictions will be in place until further notice.   Council thanks the Gundagai water users for the way in which they have co-operated with the water restrictions.

MobileMuster - 28 Feb 2008
Recycling your old mobile phone is now easier, with Gundagai Shire Council joining the nationwide MobileMuster programme.

We are calling on all local residents to clean out their drawers of all old and unwanted mobile phones and batteries, and bring them down to Gundagai Shire Council's Administration Office and drop them in the MobileMuster recycling bin.

To celebrate World Environment Day, MobileMuster will plant a native tree for every mobile phone collected between the 2nd of May and the 5th of June.  Last year the "Old phones, new trees" campaign together with Landcare Australia planted 75,000 trees.  This year MobileMuster aims to plant 100,000 native trees. more ..

Hume Highway Coolac Bypass - 01 Jun 2007

The Coolac Bypass will upgrade the last single carriageway section of the Hume Highway north of Gundagai to dual carriageway. It will improve road safety by removing heavy vehicle traffic from Coolac.

The project includes reconstruction of the northbound Hume Highway carriageway between Muttama Creek and the Dog on the Tuckerbox.  This work will remove a low standard curve on the current highway and improve travel conditions.

The contract for construction of the Coolac Bypass was awarded to Abigroup Contractors Pty Ltd on 28 February 2007. Construction work commenced in May 2007 and will take approximately two years to complete.
