Award for "Build a Bridge & Get Over It" Camp
Gundagai Shire Council on behalf of the members of the Riverina Eastern Regional Organisation of Councils (REROC) received an Award at the IPWEA (NSW Division) Excellence Awards 2008 held in Sydney in May 2008.
The Award was in Category 2 - New or Improved Techniques and was for the "Build a Bridge & Get Over It" Camp.
"Build a Bridge & Get Over It" is a 3 day Camp run by REROC in partnership with The Compact. The Camp aims to encourage students in Years 10 to 12 to consider a career in civil engineering. Students participate in practical, hands-on activities over three days that allow them to experience the world of civil engineering. On the final day students build a full-size bridge which they must walk over to "graduate".
Director of Engineering, Leon Patterson, was one of the engineers who mentored the students while the Riverina Institute of TAFE is contracted to provide the course content and a facilitator/trainer.
